Hi and welcome to the first post on my new blog. I considered diving into an article that I want this blog to be based around but instead it seemed prudent to make a post introducing myself, why I’ve decided to blog and what I hope this blog is going to be about.
The who
First things first. This is me. I work as a Software Engineer at Slimming World (nearly 2 years in) and have been working in the Nottingham/Derbyshire area for about 8 years now. I’m primarily a C# .Net engineer but will happily learn anything as long as I get to write some code now and then (well….maybe anything). Hobbies wise it’s computer games, books and board games. Although in the last few years I’ve been leaning more towards RPGs as they take up a lot less space.
The why
I’ve been fond of the idea of starting a personal blog for a while but find myself never sure of want to write. I feel like I have a lot to say but never sure how to say it, so generally just don’t. After attending DDD 2023 I found myself enamoured by Jamie Tanna’s talk aptly named ‘This talk could have been a blog post’. He’s put a write up here and it’s well worth a read. What captivated me was the idea of blogumentation. I’m forever writing code, solving problems and having little ideas. But I rarely write them down so find myself having to scramble down memory lane trying to work out where I’ve done this before. So the idea of making articles to help me remember the things I’ve done sounds great. Throw in a little bit of capturing what my life is like today when I look back in five years time just sounds exciting to me. It would be really tempting to say I’m writing this for someone else to read, but it reality it’s for me, and all about me. But if you do arrive here and find something useful, that makes things all the better. Which leads me to….
The what
Well….basically me. Focusing mainly on my techie persuits and the things I love in the technology space with a few more personal posts here and there. A few upcoming things I’m hoping to talk about to give you an idea are what I’m currently using to host this site (I thought it was pretty cool at least), what I love (and hate) about working with legacy tech (I have a fondness for aging applications) and my thoughts on GitHub Copilot. There might also be a few game or book reviews here and there.
If you are reading, I hope you enjoy the content.
