The Satsuma Complex

November 2024 ยท 2 minute read

Written by Bob Mortimer, and released in 2022, The Satsuma Complex follows Gary in his attempt to track down a mysterious woman from a chance encounter, and then various hijinks ensue.

What’s good?

The characters in The Satsuma Complex, despite a little bit edge casey, come across as being very down to earth and relatable in their situations. In a time full of superheroes or fantasy realms being incredibly popular I found it very refreshing to read, what I thought was, a very concise and none overly complex grand arc of a story while also having interesting characters that I wanted to know what happened to.

What’s bad?

There’s a couple of parts of the book that I felt were either there to set up future character motivations, tug at the heart strings of try to add a few plot twists (without actually doing so). A prime example of this is Grace’s granddaughter, which in my opinion could have easily been left out of the book. But it’s only a small complaint.

How much did I read?

The whole book!

Conclusion

I’m happy there’s a sequel to this book as I look forward to reading more about Gary and his adventures through life. It didn’t grab my attention as much as some books would but it also was quite easy reading which helped a lot with the story being told.
